Graduation Requirements

Winston Churchill High School is a four year high school, serving freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors and is a part of Eugene School District 4J. The school year is divided into two 18-week semesters. The annual school calendar is adjusted to allow for holidays, teacher in-service and workdays, while providing 178 days of instruction.

The granting of a regular diploma upon graduation from any senior high school in the Eugene School District 4J shall be based upon the following conditions:

Attendance
Twelve years of planned educational experience shall be required, except for special provision adopted by the school board.
Credits
Successful completion of a minimum of 23 credits during grades 9-12 shall be required for graduation. One credit is equivalent to a full year of course work. A passing grade (D) is required to give credit towards graduation.

Students and families may select from one of two plans to meet the graduation requirements.

Traditional Plan

TP is the traditional plan for graduation followed by the majority of students at Churchill. Based on state requirements, the plan organizes a student’s program of studies by discipline areas plus providing opportunity for elective offerings. Some classes will qualify in more than one graduation requirement area, but may only selected to count in one graduation requirement area. Any course listed may be selected for elective credit. The requirements are as follows:

Individualized Plan

An Individualized Plan is based on the student’s goals for the future. It is the responsibility of the student, parent, and school counselor to make this an educationally defensible program. This program is for the student who would like to specifically outline his or her education program toward post high school college preparation and career goals. Individualized programs often include additional course work in mathematics, science, English and social studies as well as an emphasis in a particular vocational or elective program, i.e. business, the arts and second language.

Honors Diploma

The Honors Diploma was designed to recognize those students who demonstrate excellence in the classroom and contribute service to their community. Requirements are as follows:

  • Accumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5
  • The completion of 24 credit hours
  • A community service requirement of 120 clock hours

Any student with a 3.25 GPA at the end of the sophomore year should consider applying for an Honors Diploma and should request the application form from their counselor or the Career Center. Students may enroll at any time prior to the beginning of the spring semester of their Junior year. Community Service Hours need to be turned in by May 1st of the Senior year.

New Graduation Requirements: Class of 2010

Beginning with the Class of 2010, credit requirements increase to 24 and includes 4 years of Language Arts/English and 3 years of Math.
